Bay City, Michigan: A Hidden Gem

If you haven't been to Bay City, Michigan yet - it's worth the trip if only for a weekend getaway.

Below are a few highlights of Bay City, all of them are things that you and the entire family can enjoy.

1. Riverwalk Pier

Here is how Pure Michigan describes this beautiful walkway.

A stroll along the Riverwalk provides clues to Bay City’s incredible maritime history. A bridge now crosses an inlet cutting into the Saginaw River bank. Not a naturally occurring phenomenon, but a man made slip that was once used to launch Henry Davidson’s ships. Further down the shore, the skeletons of 19th century wooden ships peak out of the Saginaw River from the place where they burned to their hulls so many years ago.

2. Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum

If you want to take a stroll through history, look no further. Below is a quick excerpt on what you can expect to experience.

The Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum is dedicated to documenting the history of the United States Navy. The museum will be permanently housed in the USS Edson, a retired United States Navy destroyer that has recently been converted to a museum.

3. Central Avenue Historic District

And to finish off your historic weekend, check out the Central Avenue Historic District! Below is an excerpt from Pure Michigan.

Bay City’s beginnings as the “Lumber Capital of the World” set the stage for a heritage that continues to live on through hundreds of examples of fine architecture. The Center Avenue Historic District alone has over 250 structures on the National Historic Register, many of them the late 1800’s mansions of lumber barons and shipping industrialists. These well-preserved homes and churches reflect the rich history of this river front community and an unsurpassed love of fine architectural design. Contact the Bay County Historical Museum for a Walking Tour map.
